Crenshaw History

All Crenshaws buried in Big Creek cemetery and living Crenshaw family members are descended from Charles Crenshaw. Charles Crenshaw was born in Louisa County Virginia in 1798.  He came to Shelby County in 1820 with his parents Joel Crenshaw and Jane Swift Crenshaw.  This group of settlers numbered about 20 persons including children and grandchildren. Charles Crenshaw is believed to have been buried in Big Creek Cemetery, although no monument exists. He died in 1853. At this time, Big Creek Cemetery was a ¼ acre family cemetery.  The earliest burial is believed to have been around 1828.
